Odepus’s fate shows a downfall as a consequence of the fulfillment of the prophecy about his killing his father and marrying his mother. When I read about Odepus’ trying to prove the prophecy wrong but with the miserable result that he winds up fulfilling it, I felt that people’s fate is at times invariably predetermined and that they are utterly powerless to even attempt to escape disaster. The tragedy in this story involves Odepus’ family at a time when he was in the prime of his life. He usurps his father’s position by proclaiming himself a king, and then turns out to be a killer with the disastrous consequence that his family’s lineage is completely destroyed. The deaths and ardent struggle among family members equally depicts one of humanity’s classic tragedies.

Be I a miller of wheat and grit
I find that strong ale enliven all wit
And to this first post, I give a hearty toast
While waiting for more fellows to quit
