Immigrants

When I first read Immigrants I did not see it in a very positive light. It actually was depressing. The baby is too young to make its own decisions. I thought, maybe the baby would want to be bilingual.. it would help later in life. Perhaps it would embrace it's uniqueness fondly. After a while I realized the parents had decided that this would be an easier route for the child to grow up as "fine American" boy or girl. They want the child to fit in and being different can be viewed negatively.
I thought I, Too, Sing America was an uplifting story showing that you can be American but not forget where you came from and you should celebrate your uniqueness.
Maybe if the parents in Immigrants had read Julia Alvarez's story they would have made a different decision on how they would raise their baby.
